Tuscany Tours

If you have enough time, consider devoting a few days to exploring the area around Florence. Florence is convenient to several other wonderful cities and towns in Tuscany.
Siena - Located 69 km south of Florence, Siena is a beautiful medieval city. The Gothic cathedral is simply exquisite. The Piazza del Campo is an elegantly designed, fan-shaped public square with the fortress-like battlements of the Palazzo Pubblico as a centerpiece. In July and August, the Piazza del Campo is the site of a series of horse races called Palio, which pit different Sienese neighborhoods against each other.
Pisa - Pisa’s Duomo is a lovely example of Italian Romanesque architecture. If you’re interested in architecture or art history, compare the Romanesque cathedral with the Gothic Baptistery next door to get an idea of the differences between the two styles. Then, of course, there’s the Leaning Tower. After years in which everyone was afraid it would finally topple over, restoration on the tower was completed in 2000.
Lucca - Make sure not to overlook little Lucca. Lucca is a charming walled town about 51 km west of Florence, Highlights here include the Romanesque Duomo, the Piazza del Anfiteatro Roman, with the remains of a Roman amphitheater, and the Torre Guinigi, a medieval palace. One of the other neat things about Lucca is that the old medieval ramparts and battlements surrounding the city have been turned into a large park.
San Gimignano - San Gimignano is a charming medieval hill town about 57 km southwest of Florence. This town is known first and foremost for its towers. At one point, there more than 70 defense towers surrounding the town. In fact, local landowners in the 13th century competed to see who could build the tallest tower. Today, 15 towers are still standing. Climb the highest, the Torre Grossa, to get a bird’s eye view of the town and the surrounding countryside.
The Chianti Region - Just south of Florence, the Chianti region is famous for producing red Chianti wine. You can sample this product from Florence, of course, but the area itself is well worth a visit. The Chianti countryside is gorgeous-embroidered with vineyards and studded with olive groves and ancient hill towns. What is there to do in Chianti? You can arrange a wine-tasting tour, visit a vineyard, or take a cooking class. The Chianti countryside is also an excellent place for hiking and biking!
